New River Gorge National Park

The New River Gorge a.k.a. “The New” is a popular destination for many outdoor activities, and attracts climbers, hikers, and sightseers from all over the east coast and beyond. It also happens to be the nation’s newest national park. The New River Gorge is located in southwestern West Virginia and follows the winding New River for miles carving out beautiful world class sandstone cliffs.

For us climbers, The New offers all disciplines of climbing from trad and sport to bouldering. The New has more than 1,000 climbing routes and more are added often, as access to new cliffs continues to grow. The New is known for its hard climbing and is the perfect location for any climber who wants to challenge themselves in their climbing.

The New, like Rumney is not an afternoon destination from Philly, but with the sheer abundance of lines, mild weather, and wonderful scenery, we are grateful that it’s only 6.5 hours from our doorstep.
